Where to go to re-live your childhood:
Denmark.
Legoland, fairy tales, Medieval Festival.
My visited to Denmark started in the capital Copenhagen, which is far cry from the usual hectic and at times dirty big cities like Jakarta, Bangkok or New York. I visited Tivoli (an amusement park), the statue of the little mermaid from HC an Andersen’s fairy tale, Experimentarium (a heaven for those of you who love science), and Ny Havn (a place to simply hang out with friends over coffee and oh, so yummy Danish pastry).
From Copenhagen I took a train to Odense, the third biggest city in Denmark. It’s located on the island of Fyn. Odense is the hometown of Hans Christian Andersen, the king of fairy tales. Here you can enjoy the shows of some of his tales, like The Princess and the Pea, The emperor’s New Clothes, and The Little Match Girl in a park near the house where he used to live. Since it was summer, I could see and experience the lifestyle of the Vikings in the Middlealderdage (the Medieval Festival). The festival was held near the castle Egeskov, where the body of count Dracula is believed to have been kept.
From Odense it’s another train ride away to Aarhus, the second biggest city. It’s located in an area called Djursland, which boasts the “highest mountain” in Denmark: Yding Skovhoej, 173 m. Denmark is a pancake country. My favorite places around Aarhus are Den Gamle By and Legoland. Den Gamle By is a place where you can learn a lot about how the Danes live a long, long time ago. It’s a unique museum because it looks like a small old city that comes complete with bookstores, library, brewery, restaurant and post offices. People wear traditional outfits and travel in horse-dawn carts. You can peep into the houses and see a housewife cooking traditional food. Djursland is also home to LEgoland, the world’s biggest Lego amusement park (Denmark is the birthplace of Lego, after all). Here, not only can you play Lego to your heart’s content, you can also visit a castle and miniature cities, or ride a boat and a roller-coaster, all made of Lego! It’s so amazing.
