Dandruff is actually dried flakes of dead skin cells. Usually a person’s scalp loses small quantity of these dead cells every month, so it isn’t really noticeable. But in a person with dandruff, this peeling off dead skin cells happens much more quickly, every week, or even every three to four days.
Basically these are the steps to mange the problem:
- Wash your hair regularly. Make sure you rinse your hair well after shampooing. Choose gentle shampoo, the ones without harsh detergents like sodium lauryl sulfate. Avoid using shampoos that contain vegetable oils because these may increase the growth of P. ovale and may cause allergic reactions. Anti dandruff shampoos usually contain 1% ketoconazole, but very serious conditions, use those with a 2% concentration.
- Apply conditioner after you wash your hair, and don’t forget to rinse well.
- Eat a balanced diet with low fat content. Eat a lot of colorful fruits and vegetables; they’re rich in materials that help to reduce the problem. It’s also important that your diet is rich in vitamins, especially vitamin B-complex.
- Make sure that your hair is protected from the sun as much as possible.
- When possible, avoid places where the air is polluted. Fresh, clean air can help reduce the population of P. ovale bacterial in your scalp.
